First Impression – Does it count?

Yes, it definitely does. The very few seconds of your first encounter with another person(s) is all you need to make a positive impact. People are judged on the first meeting and it is hard to change any perception formed at that second. It is always not possible to get a second opportunity to create a good first impression; therefore it is imperative that you get it right the first time.

The following tips will help you make a positive first impression;

Your attitude during this first meeting can build or destroy a future relationship. A friendly and approachable disposition is exactly what you need.

Body language speaks volume. It is very easy to form a wrong perception by mere looking at you. This is because your body language such as avoiding eye contact can suggest dishonesty on your part.

Choose your words appropriately. You should be conscious of what you say at every opportunity you have. Do not deviate from the topic at hand.

Give your undivided attention to the other person. 100% attention is required to please your new acquaintance or else you will create nothing but a bad first impression. Do not be distracted by any small thing and most especially your mobile phone. It is absolutely rude to fiddle with your mobile phone, tablets, laptops, etc while in a meeting. It is also not proper for a first impression.

Put on a smiling face. If you want to impress the other person, do not wear a frown face. This is because your facial expression is a total reflection of how you think and feel at that particular point in time.
